Happy Jelly-Filled Donum nom nom nom....

June 8 is Jelly-Filled Donut Day!

Wow, just yesterday was National Donut Day! I supposed donuts are important enough to have 2 holidays. If you're wondering WHY there are 2 national holidays for donuts, check this out

So it's sort of like having 2 national holidays for vets, right?  Um...er...eh...ok, not at all like that. To all of you who protect our country every day, I have the utmost admiration and gratitude for you, and in no way mean to make light of the much-deserved special holidays that commemorate your hard work and dedication.

But, this blog is called Celebrate Every Date, and not every date has something as important as honoring our country's military, so we will just keep having fun and learning about some more obscure holidays.  How about reading up on the history of the jelly donut?

National Jelly-Filled Donut Day

So what's so special about a donut with jelly,
Besides that it tastes so good in my belly!
I'll give you the answer to this tasty riddle,
Jelly-filled donuts have no hole in the middle!
Can you imagine what a mess that would be?
Jelly would ooze out and drip all over me!

(To be continued...)
Most donut have nothing where the center should be

Keep Kids Alive! Drive 25!

Keep Kids Alive! Drive 25!

As I thought about and developed this blog, I knew it could not be all fun and games. Yes, there are some very silly holidays, such as International Nose Picking Day!  However, there are so many days of the year that are set aside for observance and awareness.  These days are meant for taking action and making new commitments to help make the world a better place.

Today we will talk about Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25 Day.  May 1st, 2019 is the perfect day to be a positive change agent.  You have the ability to take action in so many ways that will help make the roads safer, not just for kids, but for all drivers, pedestrians, passengers, cyclists, and or course children in your neighborhood.  "What can I do?" you ask?  Well, let's talk about that now...

KEEP KIDS ALIVE, DRIVE 25 DAY

Today we make sure that we stay aware
Of keeping kids safe when they go here or there.
Though we must remember this lesson each day,
And make certain we always have a safe place to play!

So why celebrate "Keep Kids Alive" Day at all?
To remind us of dangers, both big and small.
If we work together keeping kids safe & secure,
Then we can make positive changes for sure!

Let's take a look at a fact or two.
These may surprise you, but they are all true.
Over half of those in car crashes who don't survive
Forgot to buckle, which could've kept them alive.

If you someone's unbuckled don't freeze (or melt)!
Just save a life and say, "Buckle up that belt!"
And you can always say, "slow down, there's no need to dash,
Because speeding drivers are 3 times more likely to crash!

Today we take action to keep kids safe and alive.
And one way to do this is slow down when we drive.
Every street has a speed limit you must not exceed
Today 25 miles per hour is everyone's target speed.

Why else might we want to slow down when we drive?
To respect the safety of people walking who must also survive.
For these folks, called pedestrians, crossing the street can be dire,
Especially if the speed limit is 30 miles or higher!

One simple fact that we must mention today
Is how important when driving to not look away.
That means if you see mom driving while drinking a pop,
You may politely say, "That's not safe, mom, will you please stop?"

Or what if Dad is driving and texting on his phone?
Tell him, "No phone while driving. That law is well-known!"
But always always always be very polite
When reminding an adult of what's wrong and what's right.

Today's special holiday is really great!
I can't think of a better reason to celebrate.
And remember, "Keep Kids Alive! Drive 25!" isn't just for today.
It's something we should celebrate every single day.

Let's Get This Party Going!

This is a blog I have been thinking about creating for a while. I like to think I live in a "Life is a Celebration" frame of mind on a daily basis. However, to be completely honest, this is not always as easy as it seems. When I discovered how many goofy, fun, crazy, serious, and interesting holidays and days of observance there are every single day, I thought, "This would be a great reminder that we can truly CELEBRATE EVERY DATE! For example, today, April 23, 2019, is Movie Theater Day, National Picnic Day, National Lost Dog Awareness Day, Bus Drivers' Day, and Talk Like Shakespeare Day, to name a few. But to start this blog with a little fun and levity, I am going to talk about a different celebration that takes place on April 23, 2019. Today is National Nose Picking Day! Yes, it's true. It's strange but true. The second part of my goal for this blog is to make it "education friendly." Why not use this as a way to start the day with your classroom with a celebration? As such, I will attempt to write most of my blog posts in rhyme. So, let's get started...it's time!

INTERNATIONAL NOSE PICKING DAY

Today we celebrate something quite strange,
But that's ok, celebrations have a wide range.
This holiday is about something to pick
It's not a lock, and there is no trick.
What part of the body is on your face
That we pick discreetly, and often with grace?
If you said "nose," then hip hip hooray!
You got it...it's International Nose Picking Day! I

t's a real holiday and has been around for years,
So let's celebrate picking between our ears.
There's no reason at all to blush or squirm
About rhinotillexis, which is the official term.
Rhino means nose, perhaps that you've seen.
But what about "tillexis," what does that mean?
It's probably something you've never heard,
"The habit of picking" is the meaning of that word.

There are nose pickers all over the world, it's true.
Everyone does it, and it's ok to do.
In fact Dr. Friedrich Bischinger actually deduced T
That nose-picking can give the immune system a boost.
So pick away, and if you'd like eat it too.
It's totally ok, and it's good for you!
From today moving forward don't tease or taunt.
Nose pickers have the right to pick when they want!

Here are some tips for picking your nose;
Do it the right way, just like the pros!
First, be gentle, don't dig too hard or deep.
That could cause your nose to bleed and seep.
And as for what to do with the boogers you pick,
It's best you remember never to flick.
Dried mucus is officially what boogers are,
And mucus has germs so don't spread near or far.

Well then what do you do with the treasures in your nose?
You can put them in the pocket of your clothes.
No pockets? I've got an idea that's sweller.
Put boogers in tissue, and take care of that smeller.
But remember the boogers you pick and squash,
Have germs, which make hands in need of a wash.
So after each time you pick, and this I mean,
Wash your hands well, get them super clean.

Now you know how to nose pick just the right way,
So how should we celebrate this unique holiday?
Throw a nose party, play games and have lots of fun.
Give Kleenex as prizes to friends who have won.
Or share nose picking stories with a friend or two.
Don't be embarrassed, 'cuz it's ok to do!
Rhinotillexis isn't bad, no way!
So Happy International Nose Picking Day!
